MY WEB SITE PARTIAL THESIS PROPOSAL: Story-Idol
Personae
Primary target users
Only these category of users will be considered for personae and scenario walkthroughs. These are anyone, writer, critic, or reader, from around the globe who have an interest in pre-published original prose. I chose a representative user from the main entity types as seen in the context diagram. As you will see these personae have actually been implemented in the Story-Idol prototype system (you can link to them directly from their names).
A Reader: Clare Carmichael is a 13 year-old schoolgirl living at home on a council estate, Langley, Slough, Berks. She has a single female parent, and two brothers (aged 13 [adopted] and 15). She is doing OK at school in all subjects but particularly enjoys reading. Unfortunately, books are very expensive and she craves new writings. Luckily, the family all have interests in keeping up-to-date and have, consequently, invested their savings in the Internet. There are computers in each bedroom (4 in all, as the boys share a room) and the living room, all networked with broadband. Sally is a very likeable girl and hence very popular. She is one of the school's best readers and has even read a poem out to the Queen (who visited her school).
A Writer: Rose Campbell is an attractive blonde nearing her thirties who works full-time as librarian in the town where she lives—Southampton. She lists her interests as: Life, Love, Wine, Dark Ale, Tori Amos, Cinema, British folks, and Pasta with cream sauce. She has self-published one novel. She can just about handle her job but dreams of being the next J. K. Rowling. Her husband left her for a circus performer. She has no children and lives alone in a 2 bed roomed flat. She does not have an internet connection at home but she has a computer and a laptop. She uses the library computer to access the Internet.
A Critic: Howard Toms is a young headmaster (only 32) of a small middle school in Northumberland, out in the countryside. He has broadband at home and a computer with Internet access in his office at the school. He has no original talent but loves to critically appraise new writers. He has interests in all areas of life, and has a wife and two children (3,5). His 'fantasy' is to discover an up-and-coming new author in the fiction arena.
