The Land of the Yellow Sea by T. J. P. CAMPBELL
The Land of the Yellow Sea by T. J. P. CAMPBELL
Author’s comment: I am very happy to have completed another novel in my growing list of sci-fi titles.
The Land of the Yellow Sea: can be read as a one-off novel and not part of a series. It will be available for sale online and in major book stores some time in 2016 (currently through the Bookanory Publishing House imprint). As you may have suspected, the end of the book suggests that there is a sequel planned. Indeed I have a folder of notes on a sequel in which Obar recruits Rose to aid him in a universe wide battle between good and evil (those familiar foes in literature, if not in reality). This time, Rose’s mother is directly involved (much to her initial disbelief). However, I have many other projects on the go, so I don’t know if I’ll ever write up the sequel (which would be a trilogy). If I do, there will be no deep layers of meaning, just a basic adventure sci-fi spectacular. If this book becomes famous, I will of course, drop everything to work on the trilogy. let’s see what happens, if anything at all.
I suppose this piece of literature has its roots in Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and The Yellow Submarine (the Beatles film). It is a totally original story though, with original inventive characters. I hope adults and children enjoy it.
As I promised in the story front cover description, here is the the letter I mentioned:
Because the draft for this novel was almost all handwritten (except for the opening 9 chapters). I had left it undisturbed for over thirty years until just a few weeks ago (first written in 1981-82). And in the last few weeks I typed it up. The reason I did, was because I recently saw a 7-year-old’s letter saying that she would like to read it when it is finished. On this page is the scan of the letter. What happened was the examiner brought the draft home to mark it. And his daughter found it. She read the opening chapters which I had actually typed up. It appears she enjoyed them. This came as a great surprise to her father. Anyway if you have to know an Amy Walker, who is about 40 years old and whose father, Mike Walker, was a university Sociology lecturer. I’m sure the sight of her letter and this book will bring tears to her eyes. Here’s looking at you, kid!
This picture must be where Rose meets Blubber Lips on the Path of Jealousy (which is alive; hence why Amy drew a face. The path does speak but I never mentioned it had a face. I love what Amy has done here, because it’s related to the whole premise of the book–which you’ll have to find out for yourself!).
Suddenly, Rose was aware of something strange happening. It seemed that the sun grew more intense and the sea became yellow and completely still. There was not a wave to be seen. Not even from Rose’s hand. $he looked up at the blinding sun and the sight made her immediately dizzy, and so she fainted. Down she sank into a yellow coloured sea.
“Help, I can’t swim!” she screamed inside her head as she struggled on the seabed to right herself believing that her head would come above the water if she did so. Unfortunately, when the little girl finally had on her feet she realised that the surface lay a vast distance above her confused head. Looking up with glum eyes, she realised she could never swim all that way up to safety.
“Oh dear, I’m going to drown,” she thought, and it was hard to tell that she was crying because she was in the sea—The Land of the Yellow Sea.
Eventually Rose was forced to close her eyes in an effort to concentrate on holding her precious breath. But it was no good. Her face was fast became the colour of her bright red hair and her lungs were about to burst. Goodbye, Mummy, she thought as she gasped for the air that was not there.
